Writing Meme

Borrowed from ericadawn16.

1) Something Old: A blurb from one of the first fics you ever wrote.
My very first fic was a POTC: Dead Man's Chest fix-it one, but I tossed it, since I hadn't worked on it for years. My second earliest one is a (still unfinished) Torchwood fic called "Matters Of Choice", so here's the beginning of it:
Three figures are huddled around a crumpled, torn body, nothing visible in the fading light but their silhouettes and the dark form of the subject of their scrutiny.

"Another one." Jack says, a slight breeze stirring his hair and the hem of his coat. He pulls the sheet back over the body and gets up from a crouch, his impressive height making him virtually tower over his two companions.

"This is what, the seventh victim in two weeks?" Gwen comments.

Jack nods.

Ianto, generally the most quiet of the team, observes, "I've noticed a marked increase in Weevil sightings since...". He lapses into silence, unable to finish the thought, recent memories flooding back, as they'd regularly been doing since that fateful night.

It had been barely two months since the deaths of Tosh and Owen at the hands of Jack's unstable brother Gray, and the recollection of those events was still painfully fresh in the minds of the remaining team members. The one thing that had kept them afloat and able to go about their daily duties was the firm, but gentle guidance and leadership of Jack. Without him, Torchwood would have collapsed not long after the losses of Tosh and Owen.

Jack, seeing Ianto's distress, gently grasps his shoulder. After briefly surveying the surrounding area to make sure the three of them are alone, Jack wraps Ianto in an affectionate embrace and kisses him on the forehead.

Those gestures of love, ones Jack did not often display in public, lift Ianto out of his sudden pang of sorrow, and he continues.

"I thought the increase in sightings might have to do with the possibility that we didn't get all the Weevils back into their cells, but now I'm not so sure. There might be a totally different reason for it, like Rift activity or something."

Nodding, Jack adds, "There's something unusual about this whole case."

"Unusual? How?" Gwen asks.

"I don't know yet, but we'll certainly find out, sooner rather than later, I hope." Jack answers. After a brief pause, he adds, "I'm afraid this is gonna be a long work night, guys. Let's head back to the Hub." Gwen and Ianto follow him without a word, then the three of them get into the SUV and drive off.

2) Something New: A snippet from something you're currently working on, or from the last thing you posted.
The beginning of the second part of a story called "Birthday", one of two 12th Doctor/River fics I'm working on (it's also posted on my LJ):
By the time they have reached the mystery destination, the Doctor has taken off the gray cardigan he had been wearing and has rolled up his shirtsleeves, and River has taken off her jacket.

The Doctor once more glances up at the sky, and then he says, “We’re just in time.”

“In time for what, dear?” River asks, the tone of her voice mildly frustrated.

“You’ll see.” The Doctor answers, smiling enigmatically. “We should move over there. We’ll have a much better view.” He adds, leading River over to a spot immediately front and center in relation to the thirty-meter high steppe pyramid.

“It’s impressive, but why is it considered so much more sacred than the others?” River asks.

Putting his right arm around her and pointing with his left hand, the Doctor answers, “See the carved snake heads at the base of the part of the pyramid facing us?”

River nods.

“Watch what happens when the sunlight hits the stones lined up above them, starting at the top of the pyramid.”

River takes the Doctor’s suggestion and looks up. For the first few minutes, she sees nothing particularly notable, but she keeps such thoughts to herself. After half an hour has passed, she receives a partial answer to her question. As the rays of the sun illuminate each stone one by one, a pattern slowly takes shape along the length of the vertical rows they create.

3) Something Borrowed: A scene or section of dialogue from another writer's story. Maybe something that inspired you or resonated with you. (Credit the writer and link to it if possible, please.)
So he knew, as they danced at her behest in those precious final moments of her very last life, as he held her in his arms for the very last time, that this part of him would always be hers.  He could only ever be graceful with her, only ever allow the music to seep into his limbs when they were together, only ever be the envy of the room when it was as it was in these crucial, final moments- her Doctor and his Professor, as he danced her to her sleep.

From "The Doctor Dances", a First Doctor one-shot by starjargon. The whole thing is angsty like that, but it's beautiful :')! Link: http://starjargon.livejournal.com/8426.html .

4) Something Blue: C'mon, you know you've written a really gut-wrenching bit of angst at some point. Let's hear the saddest or angstiest thing you've got. Alternatively? Tell us about the last time you described the color blue.
From another DW-related WIP, entitled "To Mend A Broken Man". This one revolves around the 11th Doctor, Captain Jack, and River Song:
Looking at Jack, sitting to the left of him with his hands clasped and pressed against his chin, the Doctor asks gently, “Why did you leave Earth and start wandering the universe?”

Jack, who had been leaning somewhat forward, straightens his posture, lifts his head, and answers, “Guilt, Doctor, guilt that I couldn’t forget or ignore like I had in the past— guilt over what I had to do to stop the 456.”

“Which was?”

“I used my grandson to transmit a signal that would kill every individual alien in range, but I ended up killing him along with them.”

“Was that the only option left to you?”

“Yes. It was either that or let the 456 take ten percent of the world’s children.”

“Then you did what you had to do, and have nothing to feel guilty about.” The Doctor, briefly placing a hand on Jack’s right shoulder, tells him.

His voice quavering now, Jack replies, “What do you mean? Of course I do! He was a ten-year-old-boy, Doctor! And family, besides!”

To keep from breaking down completely, Jack stands bolt upright, walks back to the window, and upon reaching it, turns his back. After giving Jack a few moments, the Doctor gets up and walks to the window, where he waits quietly for Jack to continue.

When he does, his voice has become steady again. “Did you ever have a family, Doctor?”

“Yes, a long, long time ago.”

“Then I’d think you’d understand why I feel this way, unless it’s been so long that you’ve forgotten what it’s like.”

“I haven’t forgotten, Jack, and I understand how you’re feeling more than you know.”

Anniversary: A Special Gift (1/2)

Title: “Anniversary: A Special Gift” (1/2)
Author: jackdavfan692
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: The Doctor gives River something very special as a wedding anniversary present.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor/River
Spoilers: A subtle reference to the final events of “The Angels Take Manhattan”, one event in “The Wedding Of River Song” (the wedding that might-not-actually-have-been a wedding, depending on your view about the ceremony atop the pyramid), and “The Time Of The Doctor”.

Notes: This was originally intended to be a separate story from “Well Met By Moonlight”, but after the review of that story from a person on Fanfiction.net, I decided to make this sort of a follow-up to it instead. This is the first of two parts.

End of 2013 Fandom Meme

Borrowed from ladyhadhafang.

1. Your main fandom of the year?
Doctor Who, for sure.

2. Your favourite film watched this year?
I didn't see very many, actually, but of the few I did see, probably a tossup between The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Oblivion.

3. Your favourite book read this year?
The Wild Trees, a non-fiction book by Richard Preston.

4. Your favourite TV show of the year?
A tie between Doctor Who, True Blood, and Game Of Thrones.

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year?
Hmmm..., the Doctor Who fansite "Gallifrey Base", I guess.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
I didn't really make any.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
There really wasn't one.

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year?
I didn't have one.

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year?
I didn't have one.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
I had three of them, all Doctor Who-related, in "The Day Of The Doctor", specifically.
-The mini-sode featuring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor that preceded the episode.
-All the Doctors, including the Twelfth (i.e. Peter Capaldi), showing up for a key scene in the episode.
-Tom Baker (aka the Fourth Doctor) making a cameo as a character called The Curator toward the end of the episode.

Honorable mentions for David Tennant reprising his role as the Tenth Doctor in "The Day Of The Doctor", and John Hurt appearing in the same episode as a new incarnation known as The War Doctor.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
The one for the TV show Bones. The one community for that I'm a member of has been quiet for a while now, and I have no idea why :[. Besides that one, though, there aren't many, since I've drifted away from most of the others because my fannishness, for lack of a better word, over them has waned considerably for one reason or another.

12. The fandom you haven’t tried yet, but want to?
Hmmm..., Game Of Thrones (the TV series, rather than the books, since I haven't read any of them yet), maybe?

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Easy. Properly seeing Peter Capaldi onscreen as the Doctor for the first time 8).

Spoilers: S7 and “The Time Of The Doctor”, specifically, Eleven’s regeneration into Twelve, and the circumstances surrounding it.

Notes: I started this before it was confirmed that the Paternoster Gang would be seen alongside Twelve and Clara in the first episode of S8, so it won’t be in sync with the events of that story when the show comes back in August. I also decided to set it a few months after “Time Of The Doctor” because Clara is likely to be a bit more comfortable with Twelve at that point than she’d be immediately after the regeneration.

Well Met By Moonlight- Oneshot

Title: “Well Met By Moonlight”

Author: jackdavfan692

Rating: PG-13

Warnings
: None

Summary: The first meeting between River and the Twelfth Doctor
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (12)/River

Spoilers: Except for one event in “The Wedding Of River Song” (the wedding that might-not-actually-have-been a wedding, depending on your view about the ceremony atop the pyramid) and the events of “The Angels Take Manhattan”, not much, unless you still haven’t found out that Matt Smith will be bowing out as the Doctor at Christmas, and don’t know who his successor is going to be.

Notes: A bit of opening dialogue I imagined for Twelve’s and River’s first meeting refused to get out of my head, so I wrote this little one-shot around it. I also finished this long before Moffat decided to bring River back in "The Husbands Of River Song", so you can view this as an alternative "first meeting" story, if you wish.
